Module 4

Mod 4!

First concept is Classroom management. Every Teacher needs to have a management system with a scheduled or rules. As the Video was a great reference for teachers to see steps to become a teacher with a management system.  I was really focus as they were listing each of the ways for management I found my self taking notes. I Love when she said "telling me to get in trouble or get them out of trouble" I feel that to be a respectable way to say I do not want hear it. Also Hand signals because I Know Sign language and sometimes I do speak sign with out me knowing. I would use the bathroom one or maybe use the sign "water" if they want to go get a drink. This could be use for GED or Sped classes as they would work for anyone as it is fun to use as it would be just for having a question or answer with your hand raised. I like the misery student as they can you focus on them and every student would want to make sure they are always on the same page.

Having a Reinforcement in a classroom is very important as in the book it mentions with consequences as Behavior -------> Reinforce  has of the Effect to Strengthen or repeated behavior. In the book it mentions Kinds of Reinforcement and Punishment on page 269 you can see there is picture that is a great example of each and ways it works. As there are different ways to view behavior..

Contingency Contracts -> A contract between the teacher and a student specifying what a student must do to earn a particular reward or privilege. Example ~ In a observation the teacher had all her students go to a wall where they had to write by there name a goal that they want to accomplish by the end of the day and then when they pick about 3 rewards if they succeed 1) More Free time 2) One of the homework to be waved. 3) Extra Gym or recess time at the end of the week.  This was for a kindergarten Special Education class so it was much harder for each student to work on that goal.

Token Reinforcement System-> System in witch tokens earned for academic work and positive classroom behavior can be exchanged for some desired reward. Example- a lot of teacher do this one as they would use maybe sticks or marbles and if they fill the glass or have about 50 sticks they get a prize to either toy or extra free time

Bulling is a big thing as starting as a young age all the way to adults- I know some people think that being a bully to someone is only face to face but in the book there is 6.. Physical, Verbal, Social/Relational, Cyber (Online), Identity (Racial, Religion, Disability)  and Sexual (Male or Female). I know everyone has experienced at least as one of the ones I have mentioned. Just reading the statics on page 533 is so sad. I feel like all schools say the have a "Zero Tolerance rule" but I feel like there is no way there a school can prevent a whole student body. The most they can do is spread it was words and posters. I could keep going when it comes to bulling. Table 13.6 has good points about The Ideas for dealing with cyber bulling.

  1. Natalie, you discuss some of the classroom management strategies found in the book, but what have you seen that has been effective? I know some teachers use token reinforcement systems very extensively, even to the point where students don't want to do anything if they don't get something for doing it. When it gets to this point, I think it removes intrinsic motivation and takes the love of learning or the satisfaction from discovering something new out of the picture.

You also brought up bullying. What have you seen or experienced with this?

  2. Hey Natalie,
I really I your response to token reinforcement. I think it is important to make the classroom a fun environment for children, especially when you are teaching younger grades. Having a jar of marbles to fill makes going to school exciting for the kids to fill the jar. My mom is a third grade teacher and she has a marble jar in her classroom. Whenever my mom's student fill the jar they get so excited because, they can get different prizes like lunch with the teacher and indoor recess or a movie during snack etc. Also having token reinforcement in the classroom, implicates that the students will always be on their best behavior.

  3. In the classroom management video where she asks students if they are telling her in order to get someone in trouble or to get someone out of trouble, I took this part to mean something slightly different than you did. I think she says this so that kids learn not to tattle just for the sake of getting someone in trouble. Teachers get lots of kids coming up to them, telling on someone else for doing something and so yes I think saying this can be a way of saying that you don't want to hear it if it is something that doesn't truly matter. However, I think more importantly she is asking them to keep in mind to tell her things if there is a problem where they need the teachers help to help a student who is in need, has a problem, or is in trouble. Saying this will limit the amount of times where students tattle in order to tell on someone, rather than getting the teachers attention to help someone.

  4. Natalie, I like how you covered the systems recommended for the classroom. In my classroom, these will be utilized. Students are better able to under the expectations of their teacher when the teacher introduces in the beginning. Also, it aids in building a connection with the students. Lastly, I like how you included bullying.t's not dead and teachers should be actively preventing it and addressing it when presented. There is no room for it.
